When did this law go into effect?

August 30, 2011


Who does this law apply to?

The Delaware Concussion Law applies to student athletes, their parents or guardians, and coaches.


Removal from Play:

A student athlete must be promptly removed from play if the athlete is suspected of sustaining a concussion or is exhibiting signs or symptoms of a concussion.


Return to Play:

Student athletes must be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional and must obtain written clearance from a physician (MD or DO) for return to play after a concussion.


Educational Materials & Acknowledgements:

Each student athlete and the athlete's parent or guardian must sign and return a concussion information sheet designed by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) prior to the athlete initiating practice or competition. This must be completed annually.


Training & Certifications:

Coaches must complete concussion training consistent with a timetable and curriculum established by the DIAA.
